Song Lyric Sunday – River

Jim Adams is again hosting Song Lyric Sunday and his prompt this week is “River/Stream/Brook”. Many, many, many to choose from but I went straight to a favorite by Joni Mitchell. Except that I chose the version from Herbie Hancock’s album entitled “River – The Joni Letters”. Here, Corinne Bailey Rae’s dreamy voice sings Joni Mitchell’s beautiful, poetic lyrics. I never get third of this song.

Other guest vocalists onΒ RiverΒ includeΒ Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Norah Jones, Luciana Souza and Joni Mitchell herself. It is a wonderful album which won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2008. I hope you enjoy it!

Lyrics – River

It's coming on Christmas,
They're cutting down trees.
Putting up reindeer
Singing songs of joy and peace,
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

But it don't snow here,
Stays pretty green.
I'm gonna make a lot of money
Gonna quit this crazy scene.
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I wish I had a river so long,
I would teach my feet to fly.
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I made my baby cry.
She tried hard to help me,
She put me at ease.
She loved me so naughty,
made me weak in the knees.
Oh I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I'm so hard to handle,
I'm selfish and I'm sad.
Now I've gone and lost the best baby
That I've ever had.
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I wish I had a river so long,
I would teach my feet to fly.
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

I made my baby say goodbye.
Say goodbye.
It's coming on Christmas,
They're cutting down trees.
Putting up reindeer
And singing songs of joy and peace,
Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on

Love this song! Never heard this version before, but I think it actually tops Joni’s original. (Wouldn’t have thought that possible)

Lovely arrangement of the song and dreamy is the perfect adjective for her voice. I need to check out the CD. Wonderful choice, Christine.
