Trapped

Trapped

I allow my mind to drift
wherever it may go
Closing my eyes
I see the reflection
of this sad, humdrum life
and let my feelings flow

Once passionate
caring for each other
Two peas in a pod
Connected at the hip
One is down, the other
expected to smother

Duty becomes labor
and labor is now slavery
When the love turns inward
selfishness rules
The other become faceless
There’s no room for bravery

Where does this go
and can it ever be saved
A one-sided marriage
One a doormat on which
the other walks
Or a war that will be waged

You were wise and brave to step out of that situation and find peace for yourself.

    So true:
    When the love turns inward
    selfishness rules

      Unfortunately, yes 😔

So many stay in these situations, often struggling with the idea of change, especially when children are involved. In the end our happiness is what matters the most for ourselves and our children. A powerful write.

Thanks Mish. I learned from my mother how not to stay in bad relationships. Unfortunately she lived in that era where you stayed together for the sake of the children 😢 We ALL suffered 😔

A very serious question to consider. You live it out so well in your poem! A sad situation to be in!

Yes that’s true. Sometimes you have to just step back and ask yourself ‘am I really happy?’😢

Good observation: “When the love turns inward
    selfishness rules”

Yes, I thought so too. Many people suffer in relationships 😢

That is a marriage to escape. It is dead.

Yes it was like that. It was in the past and you just have to navigate out of it.😢

I wonder why some marriages come to be.

  16. May 30, 2019 at 3:58 pm

I’m glad to say that I’ve never experienced anything like this with marriage. But, I’ve known quite a handful of people whose marriages went completely separated and broken.

    This poem is powerfully good.

  17. May 30, 2019 at 3:44 pm

I’ve known a relationship like this. These lines are powerful, Christine:
    ‘Where does this go
and can it ever be saved
    A one-sided marriage
    One a doormat on which
    the other walks
Or a war that will be waged’.

Thanks Kim, I maybe should have prefaced this as not a current situation. It was in my past and difficult at that time 😔 Sad to say it is very common isn’t it? 😢

  18. May 30, 2019 at 3:36 pm

It is always doomed with such inequality … but it’s a bond that’s painful to break.

I had a marriage like that; five years of anger, stress, anxiety and sadness. My present marriage is in its 26th year; thanks God.
