Song Lyric Sunday – Homeward Bound

This week’s Song Lyric Sunday from Jim Adam’s prompted us with songs about trains. I chose Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkel as the opening line is “I was sitting in the railway station with a ticket to my destination” The song was beautifully written by Paul Simon, one of my favorite poets, and performed with Art Garfunkel. The harmonies are exquisite. It is a timeless song and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Lyrics
Homeward Bound

I'm sitting in the railway station
Got a ticket to my destination
On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand
And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one-man band
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought's escaping
Home where my music's playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Every day's an endless stream
Of cigarettes and magazines
And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories
And every stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought's escaping
Home where my music's playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Tonight I'll sing my songs again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony I need someone to comfort me
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home where my thought's escaping
Home where my music's playing
Home where my love lies waiting
Silently for me
Silently for me

Possibly. I know they did not get along. they would perform beautifully and then not speak to each other afterwards. Although Art Garfunkel had that pretty voice, it was definitely Paul Simon who has all the talent. I am a big fan of his!

I was just thinking to myself when I was singing this that I only really know a couple of their songs. Their sound is so glorious. I ought to seek out more of their songs.
This one I can’t remember hearing before, but it was an absolute treat.

I’m so happy you liked it Mel. Yes, please check out all of Paul Simon’s beautiful songs. πŸ’•πŸ™‚ The early albums are of both of them but then they split. They never really liked each other but together the harmonies were fantastic. Paul Simon is the singer/songwriter and its his beautiful music that I love the most.

I read that they got into a fight back stage and start shoving each other.

The incomparable harmonies on an exquisite melody with heartaching lyrics, you hit the trifecta on this one, Christine. <3
