Good morning! It is Song Lyric Sunday again and this week our prompts are Heaven and Hell, courtesy of Amy from AI Music. Our host, Jim Adams, gave Amy the chance to inspire us once again. I’m sure there will be a great selection submitted today.
I have picked a favorite of mine called Heaven from Los Lonely Boys. It’s such a good song, the video is terrific and the song tugs on the heartstrings. Hope you enjoy it and have a great Sunday.
“Heaven” is the debut single of American rock band Los Lonely Boys.
Los Lonely Boys are 3 brothers from Texas. They are bilingual – some of the lyrics to this are in Spanish. Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza, comprise the foundation of the band, and it appears on their multi-platinum self-titled album.
Guitarist Henry Garza wrote the lyrics as a prayer. When he was 18, his son died of sudden infant death syndrome (S.I.D.S). It’s about the pain he felt and wanting to escape this world and see his son.
Released as a single in mid-2004, “Heaven” reached the top 40 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at 16 in August. Later that year, the song began a sixteen-week run at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in October. It was also a minor hit at country radio, where it peaked at number 46.
AllMusic reviewer Thom Jurek describes the song as “infectious” and draws comparisons to the music of Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Los Lobos. He states that “Heaven” is “a single in the old sense of the word: killer hook, easy groove, a slippery but unmistakable bridge with a beautiful vocal to boot — all coming in under four minutes.”
The success of “Heaven” led to two Grammy Award nominations and one win for the band at the 47th Grammy Awards, held in early 2005. The song won in the category Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, while Los Lonely Boys were nominated in the category Best New Artist, losing out to Maroon 5.

LYRICS Vamonos! Save me from this prison Lord, help me get away Cause only you can save me now from this misery I've been lost in my own place, and I'm gettin' weary How far is heaven? And I know that I need to change my ways of livin' How far is heaven? Lord, can you tell me I've been locked up way too long in this crazy world How far is heaven? And I just keep on prayin', Lord, and just keep on livin' How far is heaven? Yeah, Lord, can you tell me? How far is heaven? (Cause I just gotta to show some faith, yeah) How far is heaven? (Yeah, Lord, can you tell me?) Tu que estas en alto cielo Echame tu bendicion Cause I know there's a better place than this place I'm living How far is heaven? So I just got to have some faith and just keep on giving How far is heaven? (Yeah, Lord, can you tell me?) How far is heaven? (Cause I just got to know how far, yeah) How far is heaven? (Yeah, Lord, can you tell me?) How far is heaven? (Cause I just gotta know how far) I just want to know how far Writer/s: HENRY GARZA, JOEY GARZA, RINGO GARZA Publisher: Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind
