Down But Not Out – Poem of the Month – July 2021
Down But Not Out
Demeaned, dismissed, destroyed
These are things that you have done to me
I fall down under the pressure of your assault
and I feel you stomping
on my goodness, my kindness
Hurting, bruising, humiliating
I am defeated at these times
You kill me with your anger
and crush me with your words
I represent someone
you need to punish and assail
In your mind you have been triumphant
and I have been destroyed
but my spirit can never be broken
It will always be mine

prompted us with lines from Ernest Hemingway to inspire our poem.
‘But man is not made for defeat,’ he said. ‘A man can be destroyed but not defeated.’

Thank you Sara ☺️
Christine, I love the power expressed in this poem! Finding our personal power is the most fulfilling thing we can do! <3
Thank you so much Colleen. I know many can relate to such a situation so I appreciate you seeing it for what it is. Yes, too many lose sight of their worth in relationships. ☺️💕🌺
More power to you. We only surrender what we want to. It’s really up to us. 🙂
Yes! That is so true. We must value ourselves more and not let anyone strip us of it. Thank you! ☺️💕🌺
Stay strong! The message is very uplifting.
Thanks Grace ☺️💕🌺
To be destroyed by someone can always happen but defeat is a decision.
You are so right Bjorn.
No one deserves what you have described in this poem ….. broken you? Never.
Aww thanks Helen ☺️💕 That’s right, no one!
This is incredibly hard-hitting and evocative, Christine! 💝 No matter how much someone tries to demoralize us, they ll never break our spirit.
Yes they’ll try, but they cannot ☺️ Thanks Sanaa
I wonder how broken must be the spirit of anyone who would want to treat another human being in this way.
Ah yes Ingrid, there lies the problem. It is very sad 😢
So well executed Christine
Thank you Sadje. I always appreciate it ☺️💕
You’re welcome my friend
Christine, so much pain in the lines but the last two show that she won’t take it any more.
Thanks Punam. Yes, we must always remember that no matter how badly someone hurts you they can never take your spirit 😢❤️
I agree. You are welcome.
Good for her! I hope she reaches that point where enough is enough and makes her exit from that punishing place. Lots of feeling in this one, Christine!
Thanks Lisa. I think she found her voice and realized her strength ☺️💕.
You’re welcome 🙂
