Fragments of the Unhinged

Fragments of the Unhinged

No longer knowing
what is going on in your head
I question my own sanity

Poor schmuck on the phone
Just experienced baptism by fire
How dare he cold call you?

Busy work making lunch
Pretending I don’t hear
Silently praying for the poor soul

The nurse rolls her eyes
Mirroring mine
She understands

Maybe time to ask for medication
Tomorrow it will likely be my turn
To bear the brunt of your anger

Call the doctor later
When the coast is clear
Don’t forget, don’t make excuses

Wondering how much longer
This can go on before
Someone other than you snaps

Taboo

Taboo

Thoughts of you are taboo
and do not belong in my head
Yet there you live
always in my mind, confusing
unsettling, disturbing
An apparition giving relief
only when vanishing
With the never-ending promise
to return and haunt once more

Ghost

Ghost

In fear my heart races
as I pull the covers over my head
and pretend nothing has changed
What I saw was in my head
It is not real, but imagined

Through the bedroom window
I saw you standing there
Looking up at me
Music played through the air
carried along by a cool breeze

Shivering at the sight of you
I recoiled, shrinking back to my bed
It is not you, it cannot be, I won’t let it be
I forbid you enter my thoughts
and invade my dreams

Yet you taunt me with your presence
An apparition stinging old wounds
Still open, raw and unhealed
A ghost from my past
who refuses to die

Uncharted Waters

Uncharted Waters

Wading in your shallow
I see clearly what is there
as I sidestep small pebbles
without surprise
Inviting, gentle and warm
Safe

It is when I venture into the deep
A pool of uncharted waters
I find myself in danger
Below the surface in the blackness
riptides and dangerous currents
pull me in opposing directions

Confusing and taking breath
I hit rocks with flailing legs
Left bloodied and bruised
Out of my depth
I cannot survive the unknown
and your tide consumes me

Devil’s Fire

Devil’s Fire

Your temper defines you
and you have become its slave
At these times
no one can reach you
to calm the devil’s fire
raging out of control
Love no longer
douses the scorching
hot flames of your anger

Stolen Moments

Stolen Moments

A mellow feeling
of contentment
Nourishing body
and spirit
Experienced
for no more than
fleeting seconds
before being
wildly dragged
from a euphoric state
Assaulted by
angry words
of dissension
Vilifying the soul
Destroying harmony
in rage
because the moment
was not theirs

The Devil Within

The Devil Within

In the shadows
of the mind
Vile thoughts
reside in
cavernous corners
Tricking us
Fooling us
into believing
there is nothing,
only darkness
But in the black
they lay in wait
until we choose
to entertain them
Throwing light
Giving them life
Until they inhabit
our being with
iniquity
and hypocrisy

Full Moon Madness

Full Moon Madness

Leaves whisper softly underfoot
as a full moon illuminates the night sky
Branches crack in the Autumn wind
and tree trunks let out a painful sigh

Misery resides in the night shadows
waiting for its chance to consume
Love lays dying in the darkness
which no one will ever exhume

Pain a burden carried in heavy hearts
straining under the weight of sadness
Tears fill empty, black, staring eyes
masking the look of madness

No Contest

It hangs there
in the space
above you
Like a threatening
storm cloud
that sits menacingly
above the horizon
as the sun bids
its final farewell

A brewing tempest
of discontent
throwing shadows
on happiness
and harmony
Knowing a fearful
torrent of anger
will be released
in a violent deluge

A rainbow will
appear only to
show its bright colors
for an instant
before they run
into a watery grave
The sweetness
of the day will
be forever soured
