Hellcat

Our communication
is lacking, it’s almost nonexistent
Your attitude is that of
a scalded cat
When can we have a
conversation?
Surely we can do better
than that?

A hot tin roof
is where you’ve been
Time to come down
and settle the score
Harmony is what we need
in our relationship
Like it was
once before

Stop moving away from me
as if I’m not here
You are acting like
a stranger
Someone I don’t know
Come on darling talk to me
We are in clear
and present danger

Heart

If the heart is a muscle
How can it break?
In a thousand pieces
A constant ache

Shattered like glass
Trodden into the ground
Slashing life’s tires
Irreparable and profound

Ripped apart over and again
Miraculously repairing
Growing larger than before
Open to more exploring

Never forever broken
A heart always repairs
Life’s great mystery
Meant to be shared

Sweet Lullaby

Sweet lullaby

I sing to you

To scare away the demons

Who whisper

When no one hears

With no rhyme or reason

Hush baby

Unknown and invisible

Those monsters in your head

Will never get to you

While I am here

Fearing where to tread

Lullaby

Unknown

Whisper

Oblivion

Wishing to feel numb
As an object floating down a river
No thoughts in my head
Luxurious indifference
Ignoring what must be considered
Until I pull the last thread

Not wanting to feel anymore
Bone and muscle crushing pain
Body aching from the anguish
Mind full of blackness
Dark thoughts of anger
Unable to vanquish

Moving in slow motion
Ignoring the sounds in my head
Careful not to experience
More of the same debilitating madness
Avoiding the inevitable outcome
Preferring one more day of tarriance

Not being able to choose who loves us
Standing open hearted and vulnerable
Selecting those who deliver misery
How low is that bar we refuse to hold high
Inevitably making it possible
For enemies to write our history

Beauty turned to ashes
Crumbled words spoken
Hearts broken into shards of glass
Amorous touches brushed away
Love murdered with malice
Ultimately arriving at an impasse

If time is an illusion
Years together count for nothing
Then what matter is the waste
If treated with disdain
Expendable thoughts, disposable feelings
All that’s left is a bitter aftertaste

Leave me in peace
To release the past
Yearning for blissful oblivion
Memories cruelly haunting
Demands that will never be met
Unable to meet your criterion

Moving forward in silence
Embracing the blindside
Avoiding each another
Are we practicing being alone
Remembering how it was
When there was no one other

Nature’s Gift

The cooling breeze was welcome
An antidote to the sweltering day
Giving way for an enjoyable walk
Along the front of the bay

Pelicans sitting on the pilings
Watching the fish brought from the boats
Patiently waiting for scraps
To guzzle down their throats

Rounding the marina
Observing the luxury on display
A family posing for pictures
On their own special day

Dogs being walked
Children playing on the grass
Couples picnicking on blankets
Champagne drunk from cut glass

Kayaks traversing the water
Paddle boarders staying upright
Sails blocking the low sun
As day prepares for night

Seagulls emphatically cawing
Only they know at whom
Food has probably been espied
A plan of action one assumes

Some dolphins frolic off the shore
Arcing in the water
Flipping the fish they play with
As I continue my saunter

Energy from the water
Is calming to the mind
A day full ups and downs
The stresses left behind

As the sun drops on the horizon
I give thanks for the therapy
A healing balm
Nature provides for free

Solace

Eyes stinging
From the salt of her tears
She sought solace
To allay her worst fears

What brought her to this point
Had her words been that obtuse
Clearly misunderstood
The reaction had bordered on abuse

The old church beckoned her
From the darkness of her soul
She entered quietly, slipping into a pew
Struggling to keep emotions under control

The silence was a medicine
Strengthening her muddled brain
The polished wood and architecture
Seemed to soothe her pain

With her head bent low
The tears she did release
Feeling the protection of this place
Wrap its arms around her offering peace

Her body shook with emotion
Sadness was overwhelming
The pain in her heart
Mercilessly unrelenting

When spent of sorrow
She allowed the silence to fall
Enveloping her body
Like a prayer shawl

Stepping into the aisle
Her hand rested on a marble column
Finding it smooth and comforting
Not austere or solemn

Walking towards the altar
She felt a presence beside her
There was no one there
But she knew it offered succor

Drawn to this sanctum for a reason
Of this she was sure
The weight on her shoulders
Was no longer there

Redemption – Poem of the Month – July 2018

Redemption

The morning star
Still visible in the early sky
A whisper of a breeze stirs the bushes
Releasing a butterfly

Big, lazy drops of rain
Fall dampening my hair
A dog barks in the distance
Under someone’s back stair

A cardinal sits high on a branch
Capturing the essence in his morning song
Squirrels squeak their messages
As if to play along

A plethora of flowers drink the rain
Puddles waiting to evaporate
Sunshine hiding inside clouds
Ready for the drops to dissipate

Raising my arms to the sky
I unfold the origami of my limbs
Stretching, hands open to the universe
And send up my sins

Another new day is here
Another chance for redemption
My thoughts become clear
As I witness the sun’s ascension

Gratitude warms my body
I know I have been blessed
The sun reflects the raindrops
And a rainbow manifests
