The Unintentional Death of an Orchid

The Unintentional Death of an Orchid

Why do they think that I must drink
I am waterlogged to the brink
My magenta blooms do frown
As my roots will surely drown
Orchids love humidity
And never morbidity
Why do they think that I must drink
I am waterlogged to the brink

Grace is hosting D’Verse Poets tonight. She has prompted us to write an Octelle
The Octelle, created by Emily Romano, is a poem consisting of eight lines using personification and symbolism in a telling manner. The syllable count structure for this verse is 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, and the rhyme scheme is aa/bb/cc/aa. The first two lines and the last two lines are identical. This is my first time using this form.

Drowning – Poem of the Month – April 2019

Drowning

Like a thief in the night
Stealing my fragility
My heart still weak
in its recovery
Destroying my stability

Empty promises
and broken dreams
Snatching my soul
Silently unravelling
my life at the seams

Kindness disguised
A wolf in sheep’s clothes
Preying on vulnerability
Inserting yourself into my life
Collecting my woes

I have become your possession
With no voice of my own
You manipulate my actions
and my every thought
All I want is to stand alone

Release me, I beg
From this obsessive control
Suffocating in your oppression
I can no longer breathe
Slowly drowning in this black hole

Confusion

There are tears in my throat
Drowning my voice
Unable to surface
It has no other choice

I am emotionally catatonic
As I walk in a trance
Tripping over my own feet
Unable to advance

I steady myself
Before moving any farther
Desperately wanting to recall
What prompted my departure

Taking a giant step backwards
Trying to process events
I choke on the thoughts
Making no sense

How did I arrive here
Alone and mentally spent
Searching for answers
In a spiral of descent

I do not welcome
This confusing mystery
Another burden to carry
Adding to an unseen injury

Wandering aimlessly
With no compass to guide
I have become a lost soul
Left by the wayside

Tilting At Windmills

There is an empty place in my soul
Where you once used to live
You have left there long since
As there was no more of me to give

You visit my mind often
Unbeknown to you
You come and go when needed
Until I’m ready to say adieu

I’m trying to comprehend
Where it went so wrong
I know you never understood
Why you’re so headstrong

Independence is worked for
Fierce and won by the brave
Not necessarily to settle a score
And not to enslave

It is achieved so you are not weak
The monsters cannot win
Perhaps that was the problem
To explain, how could I begin

When I found you drowning
Staying afloat under abundant pain
Fending off enemies in your mind
Although always in vain

No one was good enough
To withstand your allegations
Even offering you love
They fell short of your expectations

Love is an understanding
Not a thing in a box
To be discarded so thoughtlessly
Like a pair of socks

It takes work and communication
On more than one level
Things are not always straight
Sometimes they are bevel

Life is not black and white
There is plenty of grey
To smooth the edges
Of a bruised individual with plenty to say

A different concept for you
Difficult to sustain
Although we did try
Until it became a strain

The enemies in your mind are still there
Acknowledgement makes them stronger
If you would realize they don’t exist
You will be tilting at windmills no longer

Save the Sailor from the Sea

Save the Sailor from the Sea

Demoralized, discouraged
Surrender to darkness
That will surely come
Life held in the balance
Leaving it heartless

Joy drowning
Breathless and weakened
Laughter comes no more
Spirit trodden, squashed
Thoroughly beaten

Treading troubled water
Exhausted by endeavor
Resistance fading fast
Hope is lost at sea
Now gone forever

Voice hoarse from the cry
Who would have listened?
Words fallen on deaf ears
Nobody cared
It was as if imprisoned

Nothing left to fight for
It was not meant to be
Insignificant and invisible
was his life, no one could
save the sailor from the sea

Camaraderie

Camaraderie

When the chips are down
You’re not going to drown
Keep your eye on the prize
Focus on the game in hand
No more head in the sand
You are on the verge of a rise

You’ve developed your strength
Keeping enemies at arms length
You don’t let them see you sweat
You are the captain of your ship
Sailing at quite a clip
There is no need for a drift net

How did you find your force?
Did you dig deep for the source?
The camaraderie of good souls
Is likely the healing answer
To this malignant cancer
Giving you the ultimate control

Leaning on your friends
Not having to make amends
Is the support we all need
Reach out when you’re drowning
There’s no time for accounting
Or we die in the weeds
