Lanterns

Lanterns

Remember that magical evening
We were guided to the elephants
and fed them sugar cane
Walking in mystery and through
the darkness in anticipation
Our curiosity did not wane

We followed our guide to the clearing
as the fantasy continued
and we feasted on epicurean delights
Music played teasing our emotions
Sights and sounds touching every sense
It was a most seductive night

They brought us lanterns
to release into the sky
each one carrying a desire
A wish and hope
for good things to come
As they soared higher and higher

Circus

Circus

What was once wondrous
and filled me with joy
I now hold in disdain
Pretty white horses
Elephants and lions
I did not know their pain

As a child I was excited
by the music and fanfare
Such exotica to see
Now I am sickened and sad
at the treatment
they suffered for me

Memories are disingenuous
The circus once wore
a glorious crown
The public expressed outrage
Animal liberation
Send in the clowns
