Taking Flight – 2

Abstract design of umbrellas flying over sea in the sky

Taking Flight – 2

Dreaming of another place
and a different time
keeps me centered
My flights of fancy are
an escape from the humdrum
an outlet for frustration
Carrying me above life’s traffic jam
that tethers me to the mundane
The irony? - That I willingly
surrendered my freedom
and compromised my future
for a life of servitude and acquiescence

Sheets in the Wind

Sheets in the Wind

Like sheets blowing in the wind
She let her thoughts drift away
And for that one temporary moment
She realized she could easily stray

Her mind running rampant
suddenly freed from its cage
She was acting out of character
and definitely not her age

Imprisoned in her mind
she had never ventured that far
and somehow without warning
she was behaving quite bizarre

Now she was running fast
leaving everything in her dust
Blazing a trail blindly
she followed her lust

Soon tiring from her escape
and running out of steam
Bells were ringing in her head
It was all just a dream

Autumn – Poem of the Month – October 2018

Autumn

Acorns crunching under feet

Squirrels making a hasty retreat

Leaves of different colors fallen

This is now the season of Autumn

Humidity has finally left the air

The sun lies lower with less of a glare

A crispness now freshens the landscape

Summer has finally found her escape

Flower petals dying out on stems

Fall winds will perform the cleanse

Miles of fields recently mowed

Lined with hay rolls of colored gold

Illuminating the glorious landscape

Nature beginning to take shape

Sheaves of wheat standing propped

Not a sign of any left uncropped

A panoply of pumpkins hauled to a patch

Happy children hoping to catch

the biggest they can find

For a Jack-o-Lantern to be designed

Halloween approaching in a matter of weeks

Costume considerations and rosy cheeks

Trick or treats

Lots of sweets

Bottles of cider from apple orchards

Do clocks go back or forwards?

Thanksgiving turkey and sweet potato pie

Family visits and stomachs to satisfy

Obsequious children asking for cookies

Negotiating the odds like a bunch of bookies

Football games on television

When do we eat? Such indecision

Remembering what we are thankful for

Never forgetting those who went before

Dedications and gratitude

Private moments of solitude

A season of harvest and plenty to share

Someone is hungry in the world out there

Smoke

He slowly rowed the
small boat
to the middle of the lake
never saying where
he was going
Just knowing what to take

Peace and solitude
It was a favorite
way to escape
He went quietly
without a sound
his plan taking shape

No one around
to question his actions
No fear of his daughter
Hell to pay
if she only knew of
his smoke on the water

Eight – Poem of the Month – August 2018

Eight

When I was eight
Things were not so great
Life gave me such a kick
I grew up pretty quick
A child expecting a present
Instead was delivered unpleasant
My parents started fighting
Just the beginning of writing
That was clearly on the wall
Witnessing the nightly brawl
My father was an unhappy man
My mother trying the best she can
The combination explosive
Their relationship corrosive
Living life under cumulus clouds
Feeling like the dead covered in shrouds
I learned to fake
Even though my heart would ache
Every ounce of pain
They delivered without refrain
Hurting each other mercilessly
Only to be regretted remorsefully
Suffering the pain as a mortal
Damage to the psyche immortal
Communication with each other
Was really like no other
I was the chosen intermediary
Carrying their messages diligently
The peacekeeper of the house
Keeping family secrets quiet as a mouse
Too clever for my young age
I became the family sage
Learning the art of improvise
Trying to get parents to compromise
It was a huge burden to carry
Acting as their emissary
On the shoulders of someone so young
At eight years old this was no fun
They were unable to make decisions
There were only divisions
A merry go round of hostility
I finally had enough servility
If I had any potential
Then escape was essential
Breaking loose of that scene
When I was eighteen

Escape To Solace

Energized by your appearance
Seduced by your presence
Captured by your perseverance
Awakened by your caress
Passion aroused with your finesse
Excellence achieved by your experience

Taken by your curiosity
Overwhelmed with your generosity

Surrounding me with perfection
Overpowering me with your protection
Luring me to that special place
Astounding me with your charms
Carrying me in your arms
Escaping to the quantum of solace

Escape from Chaos

Desperate to escape the chaos
I reach for my formula of medicine
Journal and writing implements in hand
Slipping quietly into oblivion

My thoughts become an epiphany
Exploding in my head
Furiously I write them down
Capturing all before they are dead

The clear night
Gave forth to brilliant stars
Lighting the sky
Like a fireflies in jars

The soft breeze
Was calming my soul
Musical leaves fluttering
I will soon again be whole

My words move quickly
Across the page
Reminiscent of ballerinas
Dancing on a stage

My heart empties
Its tears of pain
Forming verse so beautiful
Reminding me I am sane

When inside my head
Becomes dark and captured
I can set the demons free
With writings enraptured

Flowing effortlessly
Like waters in a stream
Unleashed onto paper
As if in a dream

Therapy for my head
The jumbled pieces of my brain
Coming together in harmony
My heart does not beat in vain

The pen is mightier than the sword
My words are my power
Grounded by my enlightenment
While adversaries inhabit ivory towers
