Song Lyric Sunday – Search

Van Morrison – Van the Man – is my favorite artist.  He is still touring and recording amazing albums.  This is a lovely song about searching.  Enjoy!

Philosophers Stone
Van Morrison

Out on the highways and the by-ways all alone
I’m still searching for, searching for my home
Up in the morning, up in the morning out on the road
And my head is aching and my hands are cold
And I’m looking for the silver lining, silver lining in the clouds
And I’m searching for and
I’m searching for the philosophers stone
And it’s a hard road, Its a hard road daddy-o
When my job is turning lead into gold
He was born in the back street, born in the back street Jelly Roll
I’m on the road again and I’m searching for
The philosophers stone
Can you hear that engine
Woe can you hear that engine drone
Well I’m on the road again and I’m searching for
Searching for the philosophers stone
Up in the morning, up in the morning
When the streets are white with snow
It’s a hard road, it’s a hard road daddy-o
Up in the morning, up in the morning
Out on the job
Well you’ve got me searching for
Searching for, the philosophers stone
Even my best friends, even my best friends they don’t know
That my job is turning lead into gold
When you hear that engine, when you hear that engine drone
I’m on the road again and I’m searching for the philosophers stone
It’s a hard road even my best friends they don’t know
And I’m searching for, searching for the philosophers stone

Song Lyric Sunday – Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate

Jackson Browne is one of my most favorite singers.  The words to this song, Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate, are quite poetic and poignant.  It was featured on his album, The Pretenders, in 1976.  The video has an introduction from Bonnie Raitt.

Enjoy your Sunday!

Sleep’s Dark and Silent Gate

Jackson Browne

Sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder
Where my life will lead me
Waiting to pass under Sleep’s dark and silent gate

I found my love too late
Running around day after day
Looking for the time to play
While my old friends slipped away

Never should have had to try so hard
To make a love work out, I guess
I don’t know what love has got to do with happiness
But the times when we were happy
Were the times we never tried

Sitting down by the highway
Looking down the road
Waiting for a ride
I don’t know where I’ve been
Wishing I could fly away
Don’t know where I’m going
Wishing I could hide
Oh God this is some shape I’m in
When the only thing that makes me cry
Is the kindness in my baby’s eye

Sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder
Where the years have gone
They have all passed under
Sleep’s dark and silent gate

Jackson Browne

Smoke

He slowly rowed the
small boat
to the middle of the lake
never saying where
he was going
Just knowing what to take

Peace and solitude
It was a favorite
way to escape
He went quietly
without a sound
his plan taking shape

No one around
to question his actions
No fear of his daughter
Hell to pay
if she only knew of
his smoke on the water
