Sanctuary

Sanctuary

Tall grasses at
water’s edge
as green as limes
Exotic blooms of lotus
flowering abundantly
time after time

Protective trees
shielding a sacred spot
where serenity is found
A place to regroup
and clear the mind
never hearing a sound

Isolation

Isolation

In the stillness
of my mind
there is no noise
to confuse
or mask thoughts
Only peace
and tranquility
Allowing transition
from a state
of madness
swathed
in dark robes
to pellucidity
Where the light
shines bright
and unveiled
Paving the way
to concentration
and meditation
in solitude

Awakening

Awakening

Pitch black
and blinding
Darkness devours
Slowly suffocating
Suppressing breath
Starving lungs
Until that
prayed-for
moment
when,
gasping for air
oxygen finally
reaches the brain
Shaking
the spirit awake
to witness
day-breaking sun
and feel
its healing powers
Proving that
darkest moments
are always before
the dawn
The new day brings
hope for change

Rocky Road

Rocky Road

Safe
surrounded
by these
ancient boulders
Infused
by their
energy
Calmed
by their
smoothness
Coddled
by their size
Protected
from harm
Peacefully
resting
Mentally
nourished
Ready to resume
the journey

Close the Door – A Quadrille

Close the Door

As the day ends
It is time to reflect
on events that were
less than perfect

Annoyances, delays
that did gnaw, irritate
To be tossed away
for it’s time to celebrate

Door closed
a day to forget
My glass is full
Wine’s my outlet

Equalizer

Equalizer

Finally the dregs
of the day drained
away with
the sunset
Taking with them
the sweat and tears
that spilled onto
the remnants of
a dream crushed
Writing the obituary
as it sinks beyond
the horizon
into another time

But the moon
does rise high
into the night sky
shining its light
on the darkness
of what once was
Infusing a delicate soul
with its energy
and brightness
Reassuring
and reminding
tomorrow will
surely come

Mish is hosting D'Verse Poets tonight
and has prompted us with the following quote
“Barn’s burnt down, now I can see the moon.”

Written in the Stars

Written in the Stars

If the stars
could speak
they would say
let the sun into
your black heart
So it may light
your way back
from darkness

Stop hiding in
shadows
disguising
your cynicism
and fear
You were only safe
until the moon
ate the dark

Its silvery sheen
casts its light
on scars
of healed wounds
Fading in time
but no longer
infected by
your pain

Touch – Poem of the Month – January, 2020

Touch

The power of touch
One stroke of a hand
infusing energy
into a worn-down body
Shooting through veins
A much needed
euphoria producing drug
The simplicity
of the act
yielding results
Impossible to gauge
the enormity
of the action
Yet infrequently used
As if too personal
Invading another’s space
When sometimes
the silent cry from within
must be heard
The humanity of action
to supersede the insanity
of what we have become

In Dreams

In Dreams

That rare moment
when you feel yourself
hanging between
sleep and awake
A euphoric state
you never want to end
Stopping and starting
doing a retake

Multiplying the climax
again and again
until sleep is triumphant
finally surrendering
The mind relaxes
and in dreams you travel
to another world
of visions for remembering

Restoration

Restoration

Here I sit
where troubles
Do not follow
In my solitude
tears come
I sob and swallow

The crisp air
regulates
my uneven breathing
Cares float away
Cleansing my soul
Finally releasing

I draw energy
From the mountains
and warmth from the sun
My life feels balanced
I am now ready
A new day has begun
