Eyes Wide Open

Reading Cyranny’s Cove Blog last night, I see that she is featuring something called After Eight Moments  She has been capturing moments each day with her phone and shares them on her site.  She suggested we might  also find some time to see what we can come up with. I think it’s a great concept and it will encourage me to pay more attention as I go about my day.  Loving nature, I generally enjoy running outdoors and thought it would be a good idea to take better notice of my surroundings.  Usually I am engrossed in an audible book whilst also keeping an eye on the sidewalks for uneven paving.  I have experienced a couple of nasty trips and my poor face, knees ankles and hands can’t take much more abuse!

This morning the temperature was hovering around the 90 degree mark and I had to slow down and walk for a while so I wouldn’t pass out.  That gave me the chance to study the world around me and I found these two great things.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Balance

Faces forming in the clouds
Evanescent in the billowing shroud
Colors brilliant at the end of the day
Pinks and blues give way to oranges and grey

Salty spray upon the face
Murmuring waves rolling without a trace
Windblown feathers of the hawk
Spirits of the ocean talk

Energy of the water runs deep
Crying souls succumbed to final sleep
Undulating strength of a million years
Cumulating in a sea of tears

Ancient trees stand witness to it all
Ringed with age, strong and tall
Mountains jagged and insurmountable
Standing close and almost touchable

Beauty abounds but at what cost
Take it now it will soon be lost
Reenergize the human being
This life of yours is worth living

Chakras tell the story
Where you might lose your glory
Balance life as nature does perfect
Or suffer the consequential effect

Nature’s Gift

The cooling breeze was welcome
An antidote to the sweltering day
Giving way for an enjoyable walk
Along the front of the bay

Pelicans sitting on the pilings
Watching the fish brought from the boats
Patiently waiting for scraps
To guzzle down their throats

Rounding the marina
Observing the luxury on display
A family posing for pictures
On their own special day

Dogs being walked
Children playing on the grass
Couples picnicking on blankets
Champagne drunk from cut glass

Kayaks traversing the water
Paddle boarders staying upright
Sails blocking the low sun
As day prepares for night

Seagulls emphatically cawing
Only they know at whom
Food has probably been espied
A plan of action one assumes

Some dolphins frolic off the shore
Arcing in the water
Flipping the fish they play with
As I continue my saunter

Energy from the water
Is calming to the mind
A day full ups and downs
The stresses left behind

As the sun drops on the horizon
I give thanks for the therapy
A healing balm
Nature provides for free

The Reader

Sweet sounds of the mourning dove
The sun filtering through the trees
A clearing full of buttercups and
Daisies fluttering in the summer breeze

You are sitting under the oak
Reading your book so intently
Not noticing my arrival
I observe you patiently

Your hair thick and dark
Glasses on the tip of your nose
Long legs stretched out
Sitting in a comfortable pose

Your book is of course a classic
Catcher in the Rye
You have read it a dozen times
Only you know why

You are in your special place
I do not want to disturb
Happy to be observing you
I will not perturb

Engrossed in your reading
I will watch you for a while
You do not see me
But I am giving you a smile

In nature’s mystical playground
Infused with its energy
I yearn for you from afar
But we can no longer be

I am your past
Gone now from this life
We were once together
When I was your wife

The Plastic Sea

The Plastic Sea

Seabirds trussed like turkeys
On Thanksgiving Day
Dolphins’ dorsal fins cut with fishing line
Is just another way for us to betray

Sea creatures swallowing grocery bags
Thinking they are jellyfish
Turtles strangled in synthetics
Surely you couldn’t wish this

Our commitment to save the planet
Includes the oceans too
Choking their inhabitants
Is really askew

We are filling our seas
With torturing plastic
Shame is what we must own
Act now, this situation is drastic

Down by the Sea – Poem of the Month – May 2018

Down by the Sea

Down By The Sea

The wind chimes awaken to the stirring of the breeze
The Mockingbird duo swoops down from the trees

A sleepy cat stretches his limbs in an arched frame
The sea laps the shore again and again

The crystals of sand are cool under my feet
A sunny day in Paradise and life is sweet

I walk along the beach as I often do
Taking in the sounds of life and thinking of you

There is beauty in nature all around
And I live in eternal gratitude for what I have found

A hard life lived with a good measure of pain
A constitution to get up and go on again and again

When rewards were out of my reach
I turned to the mighty pen for my soul to teach

Life is a lesson sometimes hard to endure
But perseverance and understanding can settle the score

You were out there struggling just as I
When we happened on each other we breathed a big sigh

Our jagged pieces did eventually fit
Each other’s grooves that had so spectacularly split

Now we are as one living in harmony
In this natural charm down by the sea

A Painted Pony

A Unique Bond

As a former owner and lover of horses, and understanding the unique bond that is formed between human and animal, discovering this poem many years ago meant so much to me.  It was powerful and mysterious.  It reminded me of the respect which is required in order for the two to work as one.  It also made clear that one does not own the other.

The author is unknown but through a little research I found that it possibly relates to a desert horse in Africa.  However when I read it, it conjures up a vision of a Native American in full warrior dress riding bareback on a painted pony.

I am your equal

I am a wild creature that can never be like you

I have heart, courage, and the game spirit that is my heritage

And I will be respected

I will be taught, and I will please, And maybe in time I will be your intimate

But I will never be your possession

Mine is a fierce love, which knows no mercy for failure

No sympathy for weakness

I have come from the desert with its closeness to the spirit of nature

Which you do not understand

I was born of the Wind

Mine is a warrior spirit

I cannot be humiliated in

punishment or defeated even in death

For my spirit lives on in my children’s children
