Jim Adams, our host for Song Lyric Sunday, has given us just two prompts this week, “Smart and Stupid”. I chose to go with this lovely song by Sarah McLachlan.
“Stupid” was written by Sarah M Lachlan and produced by Pierre Marchand for McLachlan’s 2003 album Afterglow. It was released as the album’s second single in Australia and the United States in mid-2004.
The music video features McLachlan in different time periods and was directed by Sophie Muller.
The song became McLachlan’s highest charting single release in Australia, debuting at number thirty-seven in early June 2004.[1] It spent seven weeks on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, two of which were in the top fifty.
A remix of the song, titled “The Mark Bell Mix” was featured on So You Think You Can Dance.

Lyrics Night, lift up the shades Let in the brilliant light of morning But steady me now For I am weak and starving for mercy Sleep has left me alone To carry the weight of unraveling where we went wrong It's all I can do to hang on To keep me from falling into old familiar shoes How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see Love has made me a fool It set me on fire and watched as I floundered Unable to speak Except to cry out and wait for your answer But you come around in your time Speaking of fabulous places, create an oasis Dries up as soon as you're gone You leave me here burning in this desert without you How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see Everything changes Everything falls apart Can't stand to feel myself losing control But deep in my senses, I know How stupid could I be? A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see How stupid could I be A simpleton could see That you're no good for me But you're the only one I see Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Sarah McLachlan Stupid lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC
