Mirrored Dreams – Poem of the Month – December, 2019

Mirrored Dreams

Today I dream
staring at the
mirror lake
I watch as a family
of eider duck
scores the glass surface
The serenity
of movement
in contrast to the
laboring below

Wishing for that
same veneer
of self confidence
While inside
quaking with fright
To project one side
while experiencing
the other
The distinction seemingly
imperceptible

My eyes look
to the drifting clouds
Where faces are
formed in the
constant motion
Colors changing
predicting
the inevitability
of rainfall
ready to release

Continuing my reverie
to the soft green
hillsides where
I imagine the
Purple heather
blanketing the
gentle slopes
dotted with wild
bushes of
golden gorse

Lost in the beauty
of the scene
Feeling peaceful
The elements
filling me with
inspiration
and hope
As always
I find answers
in my dreams

Layers

Layers

It is no one’s fault
That I find myself here
By the water’s edge
Where else would I be?
Searching for answers
as is my way

I look up to the sky
and count the stars
framing the memory
in my mind
Remembering the last time
Here with you

I am not the prisoner
living within your mind
Nor your property
but yet you judge me
I came and left
grateful to be free

I picture the angle
of your jaw
that ever so slight
smirk on your face
your eyes, your hair,
your voice

Tiredness comes
eventually
and I am calm
Resting now
between the layers
of my thoughts

Elusive

Elusive

To capture that moment again
grasping at shadows
touching the sky
Elusive
As wind in the willows
Not seen
but knowing its presence

To replicate
impossible
It does confuse
As if a dream
Imagination wild
Doubting the truth
Yet you know

It was felt
Honor and accept
for it will rebel
Live in gratitude
that you were graced
for that precious instant
with an indelible memory

Me

Me

I am wild
and boisterous
Fearless and fierce
I am me

I am adventurous
and curious
Gutsy and brave
I am me

I tow the line
and follow instructions
Respectful and dutiful
I am me

I am kind
and considerate
Thoughtful and benevolent
I am me

I care
and I love
Gentle and sweet
I am me

I write
and I create
Questioning and truthful
I am me

I argue
and fight
Cry and scream
I am me

I cause pain
and offend
Angry and indignant
I am human

Trees

I was watching a drama on Amazon yesterday and there was a dialogue between a man and woman who were walking in the city of Dublin getting to know each other.  She was from Cuba and he was Irish.  She asked him what kind of tree she was looking at and he answered, it was a Sycamore.  Admiring it she loved the different shape of the leaves. They talked a little more and he was intrigued and attracted by their cultural differences.  Although a nurse in Cuba, her qualifications were not recognized in her adopted country so she resorted to do cleaning work.  He asked her if she was homesick and she answered that sadly she was.  She said from faraway everyone looks the same, just like the trees.  It’s not until you get closer that you can see the differences.  In her job she would say hello to people and some would respond, but as a cleaner she was invisible to most and they wouldn’t even bother to acknowledge her.  Her words saddened them both while they thought about it.  Then she said, “We are all just like the trees, beautiful, and not all the same.”

I love moments that make me think about what was said. It was a comparison I had not considered and found it very relevant.  Like the trees, we are all different, indigenous to where we came from, and not always familiar with others and their habitats.  We migrate to different corners of the world in search of a better life, adapting to various cultures, lifestyles and living conditions.I celebrate our ethnicities and varying backgrounds.  I started to play around with these comparisons and came up with this poem. Hope you like it!

Trees

We are all like trees
Coming in different shapes and sizes
Some come tall, others bushy
Thick with foliage and in other guises

Trees manage to survive
Planted in many places
Like us not all are native
We come with differing faces

Their leaves are varying in size and shape
Some are shed every year
Others remain and are evergreen
As a Christmas tree, bringing good cheer

The leafless trees of Winter
Offer no refuge from the coldness
Sending inhabitants south
To avoid becoming homeless

The swaying southern palms
Majestic and evergreen they remain
Welcoming all who arrive
Giving shelter to sustain

The lofty Bamboo
Strong and slender
Producing melodic sounds
A calming effect rendered

Tropical flowers in December
Bringing joy to your heart
As a good friend would do
When you have been apart

The beauty of a blossom tree
Bringing smiles in the Spring
Reminiscent of a newborn child
Another beginning for everything

The characteristics of trees
And those of the human race
Caution us to study the subject
Before we question the birthplace

Famous or Infamous?

Famous

Famous

Famous or infamous
Which is better
Do you want to be revered
And live by the letter

Or do you want to be remembered
For some outrageous act
Shocking the world
That you want to attack

Craving attention
Loving the notoriety
If there is no goodness inside
Is this the best you have for society

Responsibility comes with
Any kind of fame
Are you up for it
Can you take the pain

Surely you must know that
Kindness always wins
Your behavior will be in the spotlight
Everyone will be looking for your sins

Be famously good
Not infamously cruel
The world needs to be inspired
Not someone changing the rules

Egregious behavior will
Never be accepted
So think carefully
Or you could be rejected

Famous is what you need my friend
If you want to be remembered
It’s the only way to be
Or else you will be censored
