Trumpeter Swan

Trumpeter Swan

Looking through the tall grass
down into the valley below
Oh what a sight for my sore eyes
Did this magical day bestow

The majestic Trumpeter Swan
Signature ebony beak, legs and feet
His plumage surrounding him
as a throne on which he will seat

He moved silently on a mirrored lake
Creating a picture postcard scene
The cold waters are his kingdom
Where he lives with his queen

The soft downy feel of feathers
Replaced by frozen crystals of ice
As he flaps wings with his might
Predators might likely think twice

His finesse regal in every sense
Elegant in tuxedo of black and white
A wingspan ten feet, maybe more
Assures an impressive flight

Laura Boomsbury is hosting D'Verse Poetics tonight
She has asked us to choose an example of prose
by Laurie Lee and expand on it using
“I had never been so close to grass before. It towered
above me and all around me, each blade tattooed with
tiger-skins of sunlight. It was knife-edge, dark and a
wicked green, thick as a forest and alive with
grasshoppers that chirped and chattered, and leapt
through the air like monkeys” (Cider with Rosie)
