The World Is My Oyster – Flash Fiction

The World Is My Oyster

Annie sat with her mother on the porch of the family home on Apple Pie Ridge.  Rocking gently in the same chair where her father sat every night.  He had passed on leaving Mama alone.

She had driven most of the day through the Shenandoah Valley to get to the house in Winchester, VA. Nestled in the heart of apple pie country, she knew what would be for dessert.

“Mama, what are thinking?”, said Annie, breaking the silence.

“My darling, I know you are a career-driven Civil Rights lawyer”, she looked at her daughter with a slight frown, “but when are you going to stop crying for the bleeding hearts of the world and settle down?”

“Oh mama, please” Annie begged. “The whole world is my oyster.  No, I do not weep at the world – I am too busy sharpening my oyster knife.”

  1. Christine, this could be a chapter out of a book or a scene from a movie. You could build a world around it. Love what you did with the line.

  2. Loved this take on an old phrase Christine. Great work. We are heading into a second week of lockdown here in Victoria, Australia, so maybe I better sharpen up my pen!

    1. Aww thanks so much! Oh poor you 😕. I am really concerned about these variants but I’m trying to keep in perspective. I’ve had flu shots and still got flu. I’ve had COVID-19 shots. No might get chat too but I won’t die. Here is the US we are calling it the Republican virus as it seems only the deniers are getting it as they think it’s fake! 😦. Please take care of yourself and enjoy the writing time ☺️🌺💕

      1. Thanks Christine. We are in a rural area with no cases but once you start letting people wander all over the place and go to large venues like football and concerts it is bound to happen. Hubby and I had our first jab two weeks ago and due for second one in October. Weather is cold, wet and snowy here, ideal for staying home and dreaming up new ideas! You take care too!
