Writer’s Block – A Haibun

Writers block. It’s when you want to write something but nothing comes. It happens to all of us from time to time and we have different ways of dealing with it. You put the pen down or you close the computer. You go for a walk then you come back and start again. We are all inspired by things around us, or things we read or see.  Usually that works but sometimes it’s still a blank page looking at you. It’s a writer’s block and we try again another day. It never lasts for too long, hopefully.

This got me thinking about people around the world, mainly women, who want to speak or write about things that are important to them but are forbidden to do so. That is a different kind of block.  If they dare to speak or write, they risk facing all kinds of censorship or barbaric punishment.

Maybe the next time I complain about writers block I will just write about those brave women who fearlessly do it without thought to their own safety. I’m sure they have plenty to say.

Wanting to speak to the world

    Christine, are you familiar with the landay form? It was birthed out of a response to precisely this, from what I’ve read!

    1. David, I was not, but now I am. I’ve just read about the Landry form. What a coincidence that it stems from Afghanistan. A couplet with nine syllables in the first line and thirteen in the second. Thank you so much for this information. I am interested in using it. You know how I love syllable counting! ☺️💕

  9. Not quite the same thing but occasionally I feel blocked when I’m putting together my radio show. I take inspiration from those around me near and far. It was hard during the lockdowns as I wasn’t interacting with people I know and even strangers for months. Yet, as you say I do have the ability to write and select my music for sharing without the heavy hand of authority telling me what I can or can’t play on my shows. As a woman in a male dominated profession sometimes it is a struggle but on the other hand I still have a voice.

    1. Yes well said Bernadette. You are unique in your industry and I admire you for that. I can imagine that creativity would be stumped without your usual muses. I guess you followed your heart with the music choices. Hopefully things are a little better, not perfect I know, but better than before. I hope you have some audience again. Thank goodness we have our voices ☺️💕
