When We Were Young

When we were young
in love and smitten
Every sound a symphony
Words of devotion written

When we were young
The world smiled in your eyes
Everything became possible
and I claimed the prize

When we were young
There was that September
Words of love spoken
Do you still remember?

When we were young
Sacred vows solemnly taken
Our rings were exchanged
Loyalty never to be shaken

When we were young
Promises were left unspoken
A rose given with thorns
and a heart was left broken

I have been writing poetry since I was a child and it has helped in the good times and bad times. I am always looking within to find the answers to life's problems and to write thought-provoking poetry and prose. Thanks for checking it out. Christine

  1. Superbly crafted, so engaging, with gentle rhythm, but that last stanza sent a searing crack through the verse…powerfully done, with that sadness lingering.

  2. The wistful repetition creates its own music of sadness, and added to that the loss of youthful dreams, love, and your poem becomes a lament. Beautifully done, Christine.
