Haibun Monday – Groundhog Day

When we moved to the US from the UK 40 years ago, the first place I lived with my husband and son was Northern Virginia. Winchester to be exact. A beautiful old town nestled in the Shenandoah Valley. The beauty of the area was stunning. We arrived in March and at that time had never heard of a Groundhog or that it had its own day!

Anyway, once winter was out of the way and spring brought warmer weather, I would go for many long walks in the countryside and often startle or be startled by a Groundhog appearing unexpectedly. It was always an enjoyable interaction. The Groundhog would amble along and be unconcerned by humans. They could be quite large in size and reminded me of overweight squirrels on steroids! So over time I have developed a fondness for the Groundhog and cheer for Phil every February 2nd. One day he will get it right. Oh well, he will still be cute.

Groundhog stops and stares
I interrupted his stroll.
We share the same view

  1. I love autobiographical haibun, Christine, and I really enjoyed yours. Forty years in the US! Whenever I see the name ‘Shenandoah’ it brings back memories of school and the radio programme we used to sing along to. I love your description of groundhogs as ‘overweight squirrels on steroids, and the thought of sharing the same view with one.
