The Rusted Nail

The rusted nail
hammered into my heart
remains in place
Releasing toxins
into my bloodstream
constantly reminding me
that I still suffer
from your actions

Your unconquerable demons
placed the tools in your hands
Urging you to sabotage
our perfect world
and so you did
Inexplicably
Inflicting
excruciating pain

Time has passed
and from a safe distance now
I choose to only see
the goodness in you
The part I loved
and still love
Knowing we can never
be together again

I wrote this poem a long time ago and thought it was worth a share on Open Link Night at D'Verse Poets, hosted tonight by Lillian.

I have been writing poetry since I was a child and it has helped in the good times and bad times. I am always looking within to find the answers to life's problems and to write thought-provoking poetry and prose. Thanks for checking it out. Christine

  1. Am so glad you shared it! The rusty nail is a good metaphor here…..that pain and emotion is palpable in your words here. I like the transition at the end….”from a safe distance”…..and choosing a positive attitude by removing oneself….knowing we can never be together again.
