Last Call
He promised to call her
at half past ten
If only he had known
She wouldn’t be there then
The traffic was a jam
Roads had not been cleared
He was getting anxious
But the familiar box appeared
He trudged through the snow
Coins in his hand
Anxious to hear her voice
They would talk as planned
His call was answered quickly
but the voice unfamiliar
He couldn’t understand
It was most peculiar
I’m sorry sir, the voice said
There is nothing to discuss
The lady in question
Is no longer with us
What? he said, not understanding
The voice was forewarning
But she’s expecting my call
Sir, she died this morning

I was feeling all nostalgic – remembering the red phone box within sight of my mid- teens bedroom window – the anticipation of her calls – the wondering, would she? Thankfully her last call – she no longer liked me! You did this so well, Christine. Hanging up now, Eric.

Thank you! Yes, the phone box was so much more romantic than an iPhone. 🙂❤️

I do tend to do that, don’t I? 😕 What does that say about me? Don’t answer that!🙂💕

You have a wonderful sense of humour as one can see on your One liner posts. And you excel in bringing a touch of melancholy to your verses without getting maudlin, which in my opinion, not everyone can do. I know, I love what you write. 🤗💞

Promised call..this brought back memories for me, the days when I waited in a phone booth for a secret call from a boyfriend my parents did not want me to see or have contact with…hehehe.
Your poem is lovely Christine. I love the ending, though it is a sad turn of event for the caller.

You did foreshadow the ending, but I didn’t expect it to be so heartbreaking! Well written, you really surprise the reader!
