Taken

Standing in silver light
of consumed moon
Staring out to sea
Hair, raven black
Lifted by the wind

Palmed rose, thorny
Color of blood
Clutched tightly
to a heaving breast
as tears flowed

Skulls of saints
calling to lost souls
in watery graves
Where pearls from tissue
calcify in salty sea

Lured by songs
of sailors lost
Blood trickles
from royal flesh
taken by waves

Laura Bloomsbury is hosting D'Verse Poets

poems by Samuel Greenberg. She asked us to
choose five of his twenty one "charms" taken
from his poem The Pale Impromptu and create a poem.
Mine are highlighted below.

Dim Accuracy; Candle salve; Consumed moon;
Eyes jealousy; Fouls deviation; Grey life;
Hearts brow; Lucid farrows; Nulling marrows;
Painted mirth; Pale heat; Palmed rose;
Pearls from tissue; Pellucid quest; Royal flesh;
Skulls of saints; Slime pigments; Spiritual songs;

  1. Each verse has its own discreet poetry but I especially liked how you wove Greenberg into:
    “Skulls of saints
    calling to lost souls
    in watery graves
    Where pearls from tissue
    calcify in salty sea”

    Bravo! and thanks for joining in with this prompt

  2. This is so beautifully written and solemn. It’s heartbreaking with the theme of being lost at sea, and the waves taking them over, that is truly haunting. The way you composed this is mesmerizing especially with the word choice and detail, such as in these lines:

    “Staring out to sea
    Hair, raven black
    Lifted by the wind”

    “Blood trickles
    from royal flesh
    taken by waves”

    “Color of blood
    Clutched tightly
    to a heaving breast
    as tears flowed”

    Remarkable, remarkable wordsmithing here. You weave a dark tale in this journey to the sea, physically and emotionally, all with such beautiful and evocative descriptions. A very haunting piece, I’m stunned. Bravo. ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤
