Dark Thoughts

Dark Thoughts

In my darkness
there is light
from the flames
that you have doused
with the oil of discontent
A fire rages
Burning fury
In my fiery furnace
I imagine a snake-like neck
Twisting, elongating
as a corkscrew
pulling your heart
through your head
before it explodes
Scorched words
of contrition
fly from your mouth
and lay burning
on the ground
Until all that remains
are ashes of what
you once were

Sanaa is hosting D'Verse Poets tonight and has
prompted us with Gothic Poetry.

For today’s Poetics, I would like you to write
a Gothic poem and explore the question:
“Which according to you are the deepest,
darkest and most concealed of human emotions?”

I have been writing poetry since I was a child and it has helped in the good times and bad times. I am always looking within to find the answers to life's problems and to write thought-provoking poetry and prose. Thanks for checking it out. Christine

  1. This is absolutely stellar writing, Christine! You give a whole new definition to “fury,”.. one of the most concealed human emotions. I love; “Scorched words of contrition fly from your mouth and lay burning on the ground.” Thank you so much for adding your voice to the prompt 💝💝

    1. Yes Ben. Unless we recognize what drives us or what we hang on to, there is no healing. Darkness is in all of us. We learn how to filter it, hopefully! ☺️ Thanks for visiting. I appreciate it so much.

  2. A furious metaphor of flame, Christine! There is a hiss in the lines:
    ‘there is light
    from the flames
    that you have doused
    with the oil of discontent’
    and
    ‘…a snake-like neck
    Twisting, elongating
    as a corkscrew
    pulling your heart
    through your head’.
I also love the sounds and image in the phrase ‘scorched words of contrition’.

    1. Yes as Sanaa said, find what we, as humans, keep secret. Unless we control it, we will be devoured by it. 😦

  3. You have written a poem of fury that burns with a purifying fire! I love: ‘the flames/that you have doused/
with the oil of discontent.’ Gloriously Gothic!

    1. Yes Grace. Some just poke the fire while it consumes others. I hope it was dark enough for the prompt!
