Enigma – An Acrostic Plus poem

Enigma

You were awkward from the first conversation
Opinionated and judgmental
Understanding nothing of what I said

Arranged to meet with many
Reservations, but was intrigued
Even bought a new dress

And who would have believed it?
No overstated opinions or arrogance

I cannot even remember what I ate

We talked and laughed until dawn
Having sipped on many a martini

We both had difficulty leaving
And clung to each other, what was the harm?
Sprinkled in fairy dust we floated in a fantasia

Lillian is hosting D'Verse Poets tonight and has prompted us
with a puzzle and acrostic poetry. the first letter of each line
spells out a word and if you write an acrostic plus poem the last
letter of each line is the resulting word that brings it together.
I hope mine makes sense to you ☺️

  1. Wonderful poem, Christine. I had never seen one with the ending letters. We all hope for magical moments like you described. And yes, I like the old rom-com movies with Tom Hanks and/or Meg Ryan.

    1. Thanks Ron. As Lillian said when you take on a challenge like this the poetry may suffer just a bit 🤣 I think she was right when I read mine back. Lol

  2. I once met a charming enigma. It took me a year to realize there was nothing behind the facade!

    1. Yes Bev. I can relate. The opinionated, arrogant man I described, could definitely charm and be so sweet, yet the opinions and arrogance never went away. First impressions should never be ignored 😧

    1. Personally I have learned to go with first impressions. That gut instinct rarely lets you down. ☺️😳

  3. Fantastic acrostic plus!
I am particularly smitten with this line “I cannot even remember what I ate”. There is an absence in that line (can’t remember) but the line is also absolutely pregnant with meaning!
And then you end with fairy dust and fantasia….wow! You are an enigma…..the sense of what happens here within the poem! So glad you posted to the prompt!

    1. Oh Lillian you are so kind to me. I was thinking as you did about how we concentrate so hard on different forms of poetry that we sometimes lose the beautiful language of the poem. I was nervous about this one so I am thrilled that you think it worked! Thank you! ☺️❤️🌺

  4. This is gorgeously gorgeously rendered! I especially resonate with; “We both had difficulty leaving/And clung to each other, what was the harm?” So often it is that one doesn’t realize when the relationship becomes too much to bear.. 💝💝

    1. Thank you so much Sanaa. ☺️❤️ You are correct about that feeling. It works well on the first few dates when things feel right but the familiarity of the feeling can misguide us later on in the relationship. Familiarity breeds contempt (😳😦)
