Starlight and Stars Bright – A Haibun

I lived in Dallas, Texas when my son was young. I remember we moved out of the city into the country when he was 9 years old. The big Texas sky is never-ending and at night the stars are amazing to watch.

I remember those hot summer nights when my son would love to camp out in the back yard or we would lay in the bed of the pick up truck and gaze at the stars. Orion was always our favorite constellation and to this day, even though we don’t live in Texas anymore, we are still in the south and I love to look up and pick out Orion, the hunter with the three stars on his belt.

  1. The only constellations that I was able to recognize where the Big and Little Dippers. I think that stories about a great hunter are more exciting than ones about drinking implements.

    2. Thank you Merril. ☺️❤️. Such a lovely prompt. Oh coming from England we were outsiders too! I enjoyed my time there and made many good friends. Although these days I worry about the government of Texas. They are going backwards. Very worrying.

  7. A wonderful Haibun, Christine! I can imagine the Texas sky is something to see. Orion always shown at the end of our driveway on one of the places we lived. Great haiku as well.

  10. Everyone loves Orion 🙂 It’s unnerving that way the constellations move though. If Orion has moved, I feel as though the sky’s not right.

  11. Sadly, I’ve never seen Orion. The stars are almost invisible where I live, due to immense light pollution. You are lucky! Very beautiful memory you’ve shared.
