Cicada Serenade

Cicada Serenade

sticky, sultry evenings of late summer
droplets of sweat mingling in body crevices
an open door offering no relief
as the air hung heavy from weighted clouds
the only sound, that of whirring fans
and the serenading of cicadas
as they make love
before singing themselves to death

  1. You really set the scene, Christine, with ‘sticky, sultry evenings of late summer’. I’m not a fan of ‘droplets of sweat mingling in body crevices’ and am pleased to say that this morning is lovely and cool.

  2. We once took a cicada for a ride! True story. We were visiting family in Chicago. At the time we lived in Iowa. They were inundated with cicadas at the time!!! We had our car parked in their double wide driveway. Next day we drove all the way to St Olaf’s College in Minnesota – our daughter was “college shopping” at the time. We stopped at a gas station to fill up – and decided to lift the hood to check something in the engine and out jumped a cicada!!!! 🙂
I also used to have them covering the screen on my window in the home I grew up in as a little girl. They can be quite a nuisance!
    Thanks for the memories 🙂

    1. What a funny story Lillian! I once took a locust to work on my windshield when I lived in Texas. That summer we had swarms of them because it was so dry. Ahh memories, yes! ☺️❤️

    1. They can be incredibly noisy, I agree ☺️Their last hurrah, maybe. Congratulations by the way. Saw you featured on Spillwords. Your poem was tragic and raw and your story behind it, even more so. We write to sort out our feelings and to heal. I do anyway 💕
