I like your description of a wretched soul beneath the thick veneer.
It takes years and a lot of battering to build up a thick veneer. I always suspect people of full of bluster and confidence have much to keep hidden away.
It’s sad that so many need the “veneer” to protect them. Perhaps if more people were understanding and empathetic, we would need less protective coating.

I think that over time the veneer make more damage than protecting.
