Veneer – A Quadrille

Veneer

Full of bluster
and confidence
but you were broken
when I found you

As I peeled away
the layers of
your thick veneer
beneath was
a wretched soul

Beaten and bruised
by life’s tragic sorrows
A product of your
environment
You took no prisoners

  1. It takes years and a lot of battering to build up a thick veneer. I always suspect people of full of bluster and confidence have much to keep hidden away.

    1. You have a good point. The veneer no longer peels away. Almost like a flower trying to grow through a tree

  2. It’s sad that so many need the “veneer” to protect them. Perhaps if more people were understanding and empathetic, we would need less protective coating.
