Going, Going, Gone

Going, Going, Gone

Going
I’m leaving home
I said defiantly
when I was four
but I stayed

Going
I’m leaving here
I said defensively
when I was a teen
but I stayed

Gone
I’m leaving you
I said dispassionately
when I was married
and so I went

  1. Oh, I love the progression of this. Glad you left when it really mattered. I did, and it made all the difference.

    1. It is a vivid memory Ingrid! I remember being 4 years old and packing my mum’s shopping back with some toys and announcing I was leaving home! She said with a smile, “OK then, bye bye’. I opened the door and walked across the street. I turned and she was waving at me. It was then I got scared and ran back in tears! ☺️ I honestly don’t know why I did that. I think maybe I was just showing some independence, even if only 4 years old 🤣. There does seem to be a pattern though.

      1. My son (3.5) said he wanted to stay home alone, but he soon changed his mind when we all got dressed and pretended to head out without him. I think it is the first time we try to assert our independence! Even at 18 when I decided to ‘leave home’ I only lasted 3 days!

      2. It’s funny isn’t it. I managed to stay away for 6 months when I was 18. Off seeing Europe as we did then, but I was terribly homesick and was ready to go home at the end of it. ☺️

  2. The dissonance of one the third response is, though anticipated, is still powerful because of the rhythm. It stirs the heart and leaves me with the reflection that the first two held you the third did not.

    1. Thank you Paul. You are correct. It seems to be something I have done my whole life. I can certainly face problems head on but something in me does not like to feel trapped I suppose. I like to be in charge of my actions, even at 4 years old! You can’t get far with a bag of toys though! ☺️

  3. And now you’re ever to wonder if you stayed when you should have gone and went when you should have stayed. Life is hard!

    1. The good thing is I am pretty good at making decisions as a grown up! As a four year old and a teen, not so much ☺️
