Downtrodden

Downtrodden

Who controls the pecking order of life?
Because I’m on the outside
looking in

Nose against the window
like the proverbial stepchild
Taking it on the chin

Living on the edge of the herd
Feeling like the runt of the litter
These are the emotions I bear

Easy to slip into a depression
Dragging others down
Wishing I wasn’t there

Just feeling that life
is dealing me the cards
of endless misery

The ones you fold
so the others would win
Like some kind of trickery

Invisible
the color of my life
I fall through the cracks

Constantly trying to scale
that overgrown fence
Just once wishing to relax

Feeling imperfect
But knowing I’m not
All I want is a chance

Look at me I’m here
Just like you
Give me a second glance

Determined to begin again
And experience a rebirth
My stellar light will shine

Brighter than before
You’ll concern me no longer
I’ll be stronger next time

I have been writing poetry since I was a child and it has helped in the good times and bad times. I am always looking within to find the answers to life's problems and to write thought-provoking poetry and prose. Thanks for checking it out. Christine

  1. So beautifully said. I’ve been having a little struggle with depression due to physical conditions that have kept me housebound and immobile for the better part of three months. I understand.

    1. I’m so sorry to hear that. I hope your situation improves soon so you can be mobile again. Thank you for your kind words. Some of the things I write are deep in my memory and occasionally they rise to the surface and I have to address them, usually in a poem.
Thank you for reading and be well 🙂💕

      1. Christine, I got the shots I’ve been waiting for yesterday, and the relief is incredible! I think I’ll be back to work on Tuesday, and even better, I’ll be back in church tomorrow morning! Thanks so much for your concern.

  2. Beautiful. That´s right, we have to shine brighter each day, no matter what. Beautiful post! I don´t consider myself a big fan of poetry, but yours touched me. Also I loved the mood of your website and the images on it. Have a great life!

  3. we are colour Christine – don’t let others dulled our hues – I know how it feels like to be invisible – so this poem is very meaningful to me

    1. Yes, I agree. Those are old memories for me and I think they resonate with a lot of people at some point in their life. 😢
