Watershed Moment
Wearing his anger
Drinking his madness
Slowly drowning
Clawing for breath
Disappearing into blackness
Baptism by fire
He had drawn her into his trap
Willingly she had gone
High on the ride
Then it hit her like a thunderclap
Her life blood slowly drained
by his negativity
Escape was out of her grasp
Until that watershed moment
When she saw possibility
Retrieving her life
Piece by piece
Taking a different path
No longer his concubine
It was her only release
She shed the last remnants
of the painful memory
This one final action
Leaving her cleansed and shaken
Her spirit no longer in jeopardy

This is a dark poem, Christine, and I can feel the man’s anger and madness in the opening stanza. I like that you have not gone into detail about the ‘baptism by fire’ and left it to the imagination. Sadly, this type of man knows how to draw women into his trap. But I am so glad she had a watershed moment and there is always hope.

I like how you mix images of water and fire here, it creates a hellish sort of atmosphere.

From a very dark place….climbing out with sheer will and determination to a place of light. I hate the happenings in the beginning but love the hope and the final watershed moment. Possibility……….change…………may we wish it for all who are in situations you describe.

Thank you Lillian. I appreciate it very much. Yes, unfortunately, there are many out there in that situation. I hope they’ll find the strength to claw their way out. 😢

Good take on this prompt. Brought back memories of my former marriage – took so many years to realize that life was draining out of me.

Isn’t it amazing that we let people suck the life out of us, sometimes for years. I’m happy you got out of it. 😢

I’m very glad she got out of his grasp… being the second woman to a violent man is perhaps better than being the wife to that man.
