From Little Acorns

From Little Acorns

The Spanish moss
hung in dreadlocks
on the old oak
It stood for centuries
in disguise
Hearing what was spoke

More than a tree
growing in the dirt
Standing for generations
A place to meet
Initials to carve
Lovers’ declarations

Limbs spread wide
offering shade
to those needing rest
Leaves come and go
a balance of the seasons
space for many a nest

Autumn’s abundant acorns
scattered all around
A squirrel’s delight
Rainy day mushrooms
sprouting at trunk’s base
Nighttime streaking moonlight

A swallow landing
on a high up branch
delightfully does he sing
His mate joins him
shortly after
A harbinger of Spring

Relaxation – A Quadrille

Relaxation

Steep the fragrant blossoms
In oil
and pluck the grapes
from the vine
Slice the ripe oranges
And sweeten the wine

Draw a bath
of fresh scented roses
and recline
in its relaxant power
Lie back closing your eyes
and envisage
the Lotus flower

White Out

White Out

The snow kisses the ground
And lingers awhile
Its down-like blanket
shrouding the forest
fooling us
with a wicked smile

Tree branches encased
with crystal ice
Preservation limited
until Spring
when the sun returns
to this part of paradise

Lonely footprints
in the virgin snow
marking the journey
of someone’s adventure
across the field
now fallow

No tire tracks to be seen
and no soul in sight
Not even a snowman
gracing a garden
or a cardinal against
the backdrop of white

Stillness

Stillness

Finally, the oxygen
fills my head
and my breathing
settles
into its natural
rhythmic sound

The candle flickers
and eyes close
My brain slowly
calms
until I am at peace
where it is always found

Mind and body
in harmony
Outside world
closed off
Tranquility
all around

The stillness rejuvenates
body and soul
Clarity is the gift
to myself
for
I will not be bound

Song Lyric Sunday – No

I must be psychic because I heard this old Bill Withers song earlier this week and thought I hope I get to use it for an upcoming Song Lyric Sunday. Well thanks to Jim Adams, our host again, I can! The theme is “NO” and there were plenty of songs to choose from. I love this one. It’s moody and heartfelt reflecting the agony of being apart from someone you love. Bill Withers wrote this song in 1971. I hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
Ain't No Sunshine

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
Anytime she goes away

Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away

And I know, I know, I know, I know,
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know,
Hey, I oughtta leave young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away
Anytime she goes away

Apparition

Apparition

Often, she would come
to the frozen pond
A place of solace
Finding peace, courtesy of
Nature’s magic wand

She occasionally saw the pair
on the ice arm in arm
Sometimes they would dance
Holding each other
Skating with such charm

Sitting by the frosted tree
Music filtered through the air
Where could that be coming from?
Looking closer at the couple
She studied them with a stare

Their clothes were from
a time in history
The music was a waltz
She had never noticed before
It was now a mystery

Who were these people
that appeared from time to time?
Was she the only one
who could see them?
Why were her feelings sublime?

Nothing seemed to add up
There was no trace of a car
She called to them
but they did not answer
Maybe she was too far

Realizing they were ghosts
as they faded from sight
Her mind  playing tricks again
in the chilled afternoon air
As she stared into the white

Offering

Offering

The forecast is bright
with no chance of showers
The sun shines
and birds sing
My world full of flowers

A spring in my step
and a steady gait
As I walk towards you
well prepared
and accepting of my fate

Determined to win you back
in this arena of possibility
My confidence level high
With balance of mind
Convinced of the feasibility

A heady combination
Of love and adoration
I bring you my heart
as my humble offering
and wait in anticipation

Wishing and Hoping

Wishing and Hoping

Dare I dream
that one day I will be
playing on the beach
down by the sea
making sandcastles
catching fish
collecting shells
making a wish

Living in snow
more than half a year
heavy clothes
and winter gear
sunshine hidden
for most of the time
frozen world
it seems like a crime

I wish and hope
and want to be
warm and happy
under a palm tree
goodbye cold and snow
Please set me free
so I may live
down by the sea

Haunting – Poem of the Month – February 2019

Haunting

The range of emotions
Disturbing and alarming
Unforeseen
Out of the blue
Possibly harming

Perceptions cut deep
A woeful heart bleeding
Vagrant feelings
Homeless
and needing

A future in suspension
Spirit crying for healing
An empty shell
Cast aside
Forever haunting
