Ripe for the Picking – A Haibun

Ripe for the Picking

As kids growing up we would pile into the family car for the Sunday drive.  Living in the city this was most often a trip into the country where we could connect with nature.

The car rides would seem endless and there were no videos, iPhones or iPads.  We would play I Spy and word games to pass the time and maybe stop for a picnic on the way.

Once there, we’d fish for tadpoles, walk in the woods picking bluebells and our favorite would be plucking those wild blackberries from the brambles and eating them on the way home.

Hedgerows of brambles
The highlight of our summer
Picking blackberries

tonight and she has challenged us with writing
about Nature and she shared some words with
us as prompts. I chose ‘bramble’

Deep Decline

Deep Decline

Who are you today?
Is it Jekyll or Hyde?
Good cop or bad cop?
This game I cannot bide
Each day a crap shoot
Already out on the ledge
No lucky in this dip
I’m teetering on the edge

Ephemeral happiness
lasting just two days
Then it was back fighting
and your ugly ways
A referee needed
our similarities forgotten
Too busy with anger
to see it’s turned rotten

Wall of Secrets

Wall of Secrets

A place for a clandestine encounter
or secrets hidden within its periphery
This wall could tell stories
of trysts, surreptitious meetings
Perhaps even some bewitchery

Traces of lichen and moss
Covering the ancient rocks
Underneath, romantic messages
left by star crossed lovers whose
footsteps are now covered with Phlox

The old gate bearing initials
Carved with high expectations
Yet thwarting courtship
blocking fate, destiny
and undying declarations

Song Lyric Sunday – The Best

This week Jim Adams has prompted us with Cards, Dice, Gamble, Lose or Win for Song Lyric Sunday.

I must admit I changed my mind half a dozen times and was all set to go with a different song, but someone beat me to it! I went with Tina Turner’s ‘The Best’. It is a rousing, anthem-like song about finding the most amazing man ever and so she has won the jackpot!

It’s difficult to resist seeing the great Tina Turner in action so hope you enjoy the video. Have a great Sunday!

Lyrics

The Best
Tina Turner

I call you when I need you, my heart’s on fire
You come to me, come to me wild and wired
Oh, you come to me, give me everything I need

Give me a life time of promises and a world of dreams
Speak the language of love like you know what it means
Mm, and it can’t be wrong, take my heart and make it strong, babe
You’re simply the best, better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I ever met
I’m stuck on your heart, I hang on every word you say
Tear us apart, baby, I would rather be dead

In your heart I see the start of every night and every day
In your eyes I get lost, I get washed away
Just as long here in your arms I could be in no better place
You’re simply the best, better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I ever met
I’m stuck on your heart, I hang on every word you say
Tear us apart, baby, I would rather be dead

Each time you leave me I start losing control
You’re walking away with my heart and my soul
I can feel you even when I’m alone
Oh, baby, don’t let go
You’re the best, better than all the rest
Better than anyone, anyone I ever met
I’m stuck on your heart
I hang on every word you say
Tear us apart
Baby I would rather be dead
Oh you’re the best

Liar, Liar

Liar, Liar

Oh, how the mighty have fallen
Like the descending leaves of Autumn
Pointless to nurture this self-importance
And the blind denial of inadvertence

With integrity always in question
To blow one’s own trumpet an obsession
No inventory of achievements
And pathetic service deferments

Your adversaries looking for peace
Wishing boastful outbursts would cease
Calling you out on your phony claims
Watching your fake news go up in flames

Earth Angel

Earth Angel

A rose among the thorns
her beauty a beacon of hope
to those down in the mire
and at the end of their rope

She was a good woman
sacrificing for those in need
The hungry and poor at the mercy
of the rich man’s greed

With no thought of self
her own agenda delayed
Working for the less fortunate
A duty no one could dissuade

Faceless

Faceless

They called her sister
but a sibling she was not
Her personality hidden

Not permitted to show
what she had and
a label was forbidden

An angel in costume
Nourishing and nurturing all
Giving love to those in need

They built an effigy in her honor
but it was faceless and cold
And sometimes it would bleed

One Liner Wednesday

One Liner Wednesday again and time for a laugh with me on this Hump Day. I suppose I should look for a really profound quote to share with you, but I feel that my poetry each day can be rather serious. So instead let’s just enjoy a silly cartoon!

Have a great Wednesday!

Silver Lining

Silver Lining

A droplet of rain trickled
down the window pane
The sky had darkened
and the light began to wane
Thoughts of the day
relived again in her head
Shuddering she turned
back towards the bed

Sleep would remedy all
and she craved the escape
Time to heal and repair
and her life to reshape
The room felt dark and oppressive
Trapping her somewhere in between
and just then the sun smiled
through a crack in the silkscreen

She saw a bluebird on a bough
Calling to her sweetly in song
A white ribbon tied to it
Stretching towards her, quite long
Taking hold of its tether
They went together across the field
She and the bluebird of happiness
On the way to being healed

Fret Not

Fret Not

Please, love, fret no more
Crying will make it worse
If words of anger are spoken
It does not make a curse

The air had been very heated
and emotions were running quite high
Hurtful things were conveyed
but your tears will eventually dry

Kim, from Writing in North Norfolk, is hosting
Monday Quadrille at D'Verse Poets tonight.
She has prompted us with the word Fret which
can be a verb or a noun. I chose the verb.
A Quadrille is a poem with exactly 44 words
excluding the title.
