He slowly rowed the
small boat
to the middle of the lake
never saying where
he was going
Just knowing what to take
Peace and solitude
It was a favorite
way to escape
He went quietly
without a sound
his plan taking shape
No one around
to question his actions
No fear of his daughter
Hell to pay
if she only knew of
his smoke on the water

Her perfume redolent
in the night air
as she walked
to the water
alone
with ne’er a care
What was blue
had become black
with no warning
In a heartbeat
she had been knocked
on her back
Without substance
an accusation held
Lies spread
in wildfire
her dignity at risk
she was compelled
His rebuke cruel
and unfounded
confrontation inevitable
Waiting by the shore
calm and present
his demeanor unbounded
Confusion existed
stretching distance between
Eyes locked
apology offered from
him to her
she began to careen
Caught in his arms
was a natural state
The darkness lifted
memory vanished
in a flash
like it never existed

Don’t think outside
the box
or even when you’re in it
Throw the box away
Containing nonsense
you never look at
Hoarding is a disease
You don’t need it anyway
Don’t get boxed in
like Jack did
He had to jump
Remember Boxing Day?

Giving potency
to the dormant
a zest for life
and a desire
to move forward
The course will be drawn
Be confident
in your quest
Eyes straight ahead
you’re never alone
Challenges met
Another day’s dawn
Abiding love
will not fade
or wane
Invisible to the eye
it will stay strong
a crutch to lean on
When times are rough
it will be the underpin
Keeping you upright
and moving forward
Competing
in life’s marathon

The monster reared
his head once more
His flaming mouth
scorching my words
before they became sound
I lay singed and tortured
while he continued with
his flaring assault
Blinding anger has taken
over his body
I am melting on the ground
Silenced by his cruelty
helpless and unable
to stand up to him
I save my words in my mind
they will not be forgotten
One day I will be able to expound

Our communication
is lacking, it’s almost nonexistent
Your attitude is that of
a scalded cat
When can we have a
conversation?
Surely we can do better
than that?
A hot tin roof
is where you’ve been
Time to come down
and settle the score
Harmony is what we need
in our relationship
Like it was
once before
Stop moving away from me
as if I’m not here
You are acting like
a stranger
Someone I don’t know
Come on darling talk to me
We are in clear
and present danger

This week’s Song Lyric Sunday from Helen Vahdati is DRINK/DRIVE
So many songs to choose from! The list is endless.
My choice evokes lots of great memories, one being from just a year ago when I had the chance to see Smokey Robinson in concert again, many years after the first time. This guy still has it! He was amazing and his rendition of Cruisin’ brought the house down.
Enjoy it!
Cruisin’

Lucia stared through the window of the beautiful restaurant. It was 3:00pm and her interview was at 3:15 pm.
This was a big step up from her family’s restaurant in the Bronx. The Italian Trattoria where everyone from the neighborhood would come. Her grandparents, immigrants from Sicily, had opened the restaurant in the 1930s. Lucia, her parents and three brothers were all recruited into the business. There was no escaping it. She was the youngest but she became the face of the restaurant. Her siblings were content to be at the back of the house in the kitchen, but she had always been pushed front and center by her parents and all the patrons knew her. They had known her since she was a child filling their water glasses on a Sunday afternoon. It had always been this way. It became known as Lucia’s Bistro.
Now she was a grown woman and had outgrown the family restaurant. She was ready to spread her wings to the Upper East Side. Understanding all aspects of the restaurant business this was her chance to see how the other side lived.
She entered the restaurant and confidently introduced herself to the Maître d’
